WARDOGS Classes and Progression
Assault, Medic, Recon, Support, Driver, Pilot — you never pick a class. You become one by doing the work.
WARDOGS does not have a class select screen. You do not lock Assault in the lobby and then get denied a defib. You buy kit, you do work, and six separate XP tracks notice. That is the whole identity of “classes” in this shooter, and it is the mechanic new players miss when they treat the vendor like a hero picker. Pair this page with loadouts for the per-life shop and getting started if you have not spent the first $10,000 yet.
Numbers below are playtest-recorded from Closed Alpha and the August / September closed betas. Level caps, exact XP tables, and which item sits on which rung can still move before or during Early Access on 10 September 2026. Steam and BULKHEAD win when a wiki spreadsheet disagrees.
Six tracks, one Wardog level
Community catalogues and in-game vendor colouring agreed on six role tracks. Official FAQ language names examples such as Medic and Pilot and is explicit that there are no set classes. The six names testers actually leveled:
| Track | How testers earned XP | What it tended to unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Rifle and grenade work, Assault-tagged items | Better ARs, grenades, mid-range attachments |
| Medic | Bandaging, revives, SMG kills, medical tools | Defibs, better medical, SMGs, smoke |
| Recon | DMR / sniper kills, spotting, binoculars, rangefinders | Long rifles, ghillie, intel tools |
| Support | FOB building, repairs, launchers, LMGs, shotguns, breaching | Hammers, rockets, AA, denial kit |
| Driver | Ground taxis, supply runs, spawn-vehicle work | Faster trucks, Humvees, some armour gates |
| Pilot | Helicopter lifts, air supply, air assists | Little birds, UH-1Y class, later the Havoc |
Hover the vendor. Playtests painted the contributing role in orange. If you only ever dump Assault rifles, five other ladders sit idle. Your Wardog (sometimes written WARDOG) level is the sum of the six class levels. Account-wide gear — armour, backpacks, some sidearms, heavy armour gates in vehicle catalogues — often keyed off that sum, not off a single track. Driving a lot will never unlock a helicopter. Piloting a lot will never buy you a better Galil.
Community databases treated each track as climbing toward 100, which would make a theoretical Wardog 600. Live gates in the vendor were much earlier than that: Infantry / Assault rifles in the first tens of levels, a UH-1Y around Pilot 10 in one catalogue, an L2A6 behind a Wardog-level gate rather than Driver. Read the tile in front of you.
Level is permission. Cash is the purchase.
Unlocking is two steps, the same trap as the building hammers:
- Earn enough XP in the track (or Wardog sum) so the item appears.
- Pay a one-time cash unlock, then still pay the per-life vendor price every time you take it out.
You can be Support 7 and too poor to buy the large hammer. You can unlock the M4 and still be too broke to lose it. Faction starter rifles exist so you can leave spawn if you buy nothing. They are not a late-game plan. The persistent wallet on how to make money is what turns a greyed tile into a gun you can actually die with.
Major-update talk in playtests included seasonal or branch wipes that convert leftover progress to a cosmetic currency. Do not treat a Closed Beta 02 level as an Early Access plan unless Steam News says it carries. The closed beta page is the wipe warning.
How to actually play a role without locking it
Because there is no quota, pubs starve. Six DMRs and zero defibs is a choice the vendor allowed. A useful stack quietly covers:
- Assault bodies in the zone. This is the default first-week track and it is still occupancy, not a deathmatch ladder. See how to win.
- Medic as the cheapest win. Revives pay cash and put a double-count Hot Zone body back on the census. Bribes in playtests paid the rescuer extra.
- Support if the faction wants a FOB that is not a sandbag joke. Building XP is the hammer track.
- Recon on the rim, not as six people ignoring the inner circle. Spot assists level the track even when someone else fires the shot.
- Driver / Pilot as the money printers PC Gamer watched sitting near the top of the cash board with zero kills. Transport is a class. Treat it like one.
You can mix in one life: a rifle that feeds Assault plus a defib that feeds Medic, if the backpack fits. Official copy says aspiring medics buy bandages and may combine building and medical by buying a larger pack. That is the design, not an exploit.
Vehicle gates are three counters, not one
The vehicles page is the catalogue. The progression mistake is assuming one XP bar opens the whole motor pool:
- Land transport tiles often read Driver level.
- Aircraft tiles read Pilot level.
- Tanks and some artillery in community snapshots sat on Wardog level (for example L2A6 and Gepard well above a new account).
A dedicated taxi main will unlock trucks and still stare at a grey Havoc. That is working as intended. If your faction needs airlift, someone has to fly, not just farm Assault.
A first-week progression plan
- Spend two matches on a cheap rifle so Assault moves without bankrupting you.
- Buy medical and actually use it. Medic is the track that makes friends, and friends are how you stay in the zone.
- One life as a passenger-counting driver. You will understand the money page faster than another highlight clip.
- If the pub has no walls, buy a hammer and put Support on the board. One FOB on the approach beats another scoped AR.
- Ignore S-tier streamer unlock screenshots until the wallet can eat two deaths. Permission without cash is a grey button.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common WARDOGS questions.
Are there classes in WARDOGS?
No locked classes. Six XP tracks — Assault, Medic, Recon, Support, Driver, and Pilot — level from the work you do. You can mix gear from any track in one life. See loadouts.
What is Wardog level?
The account level: the sum of your six class levels. Some armour, backpacks, and heavy vehicles gated off that sum in playtests rather than off a single track.
Why is a gun still locked after I leveled?
Level reveals the tile. A one-time cash unlock plus the per-life price still apply. Being broke with a high Assault level is a wallet problem, not a bug. How to make money is the fix.
Does driving unlock helicopters?
No. Driver XP opens ground transport. Pilot XP opens aircraft. Tanks often sat on Wardog level. Details on vehicles.
